The Louisiana Purchase and the Sugar Plantation Stories

Louisiana and the Louisiana Purchase  continues to bring interesting stories of families, sugar plantations and the enslaved people who helped build the wealth the region was known for.  Our story continues with sharing more about the Creole people who were assimilated into American culture, taught English in school and separated from many of their community members, however their traditions and customs prevailed. In last week’s episode we talked about the complexities of the Creole identity and how the definition extends far beyond race.

On this week’s episode we continue with the story of the Duparc family and export the personal stories of Laura Plantation and the people who called it home.  We dive right back into the tour as Joseph tells us about the distinct architecture of the Duparc plantation home and the middle son of the second Duparc generation – Flagy and we move to the area where the slaves lived and their descents continued to live until early 1990’s.
